SOCCER: Neck injury sends soccer player to hospital

Amy O'Hara treated, released Monday from Ball Memorial Hospital

Freshman goalkeeper Amy O'Hara was treated and released from Ball Memorial Hospital Monday after sustaining neck injuries during practice. Ball State University's soccer coach Michelle Salmon and assistant director of communications and marketing Matt McCollester said Ball State University trainers decided to send O'Hara to the hospital as a precautionary measure for her neck injuries.

"Soccer is a contact sport, and injuries occur," Salmon said. "Our trainers did an outstanding job assessing the injuries. We always put our student-athletes first and we treat everything seriously."

The injury occurred as the soccer team was holding practice on the artificial turf field near Scheumann Stadium around 4 p.m. Monday. McCollester and Salmon did not know the full extent of O'Hara's injuries, but Salmon said O'Hara is resting and will miss some practice, but is not likely to miss any classes.

"Goalkeeping is one of those jobs where you put your body on the line," Salmon said. "[Amy] will bounce back from this injury, just give her a couple of days. She's tough, and a battler. If you talk to Amy, she'll want to get out there and play right now. As a coach, you love to see that mentality, but you have to use your common sense for [my players] sometimes."

O'Hara is from Bay Village, Ohio, and had 311 saves and 24 shutout games while playing high school soccer. In her career, she has allowed 35 goals and has won numerous awards including 2002, 2003 and 2005 conference championships with Bay Village High School. She was named to the Adidas Regional All-American First Team and was a member of the Ohio North State Team of the Olympic Development Program in 2002 through 2004.

"Today was an isolated incident," Salmon said. "Amy is a tough kid, and she's very resilient."
