MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals land top 20 state-ranked prospect

With fewer than 48 hours before the Ball State University men's basketball team opens its 2006-07 season against Northern Colorado University, Ronny Thompson has signed a new recruit.

According to Thompson, Melvin Goins has signed a Nation Letter of Intent to attend Ball State next season.

"Melvin is a special talent. He is strong, quick and can be an impact player. I am really ecstatic to sign a player the quality of Melvin. We are extremely excited to have him join our Ball State program," the Ball State athletics Web site said.

Goins, a 5-foot-11 point guard from Humble, Texas, is a senior at Christian Life Center Academy. Last year Goins attend Heritage Christian, and averaged 25 points and six assists per game during a 28-14 season. Along with being a member of his high school basketball team, Goins plays select basketball for the Dallas Mustangs AAU team.

According to rivals.com, Goins is the ranked No. 19 best high school basketball player in Texas for the class of 2007 and is considered a three-star prospect (out of five stars).
