Footsteps will replace motor traffic tonight on Ball State University's main road.McKinley Avenue will be shut down from Neely to Riverside avenues at 4:30 p.m. for Ball State's first Music on McKinley, a festival of musical acts, vendors and artists, which kicks off at 5 p.m. "It is a departure from the rest of Homecoming Week," event coordinator David Downing said."It should promote relaxation, because it's not a contest." He said thirteen acoustic acts performing from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.Talent Search instrumental winner Terry Jackson said he will perform original guitar songs. Chase Overbeeke, another Talent Search performer, said he would perform about 20 to 30 songs, including "S.O.S." by the Police and "Home" by Michael Buble. In addition to the musicians, three Ball State student artists will display art on University Green. "One of the artists is Steven Garst, who will be actually painting during the event," Downing said. Student vendors will sell s'mores and hot chocolate, he said, and fashion merchandising students will sell necklaces.To continue the festivities, Shafer Tower will ring with carillon bell music from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., played by John Gouwens, visiting professor from Culver Academies, Homecoming publicity chairwoman Christine Lindner said. "After the performance, he will give tours of the tower." she said. Carillon concerts are traditionally played at Ball State events, such as Family Weekend, but this is the first time it is being used for Music on McKinley. Carillon concerts have been played on the Saturday of Homecoming before."[The performance] attracted many alumni, but we wanted to get more students attracted to the event this year," Downing said. "The carrillon is an amazing instrument." At 8 p.m., fireworks will be shot from LaFollette Field, Downing said. The fireworks are sponsored by Student Government Association, which gave the Steering Committee $2,000 for the show.Downing said that McKinley will be closed until the area is secured from the fireworks display, which he said should be about 9 p.m.
