University police continue investigating Burris vandalism

The University Police Department investigation continues in the Burris Laboratory School vandalism case from Sept. 12. Permanent damage was not done, but the locks on the doors to the electrical room and first floor offices were tampered with, leaving police unable to open them, Jay McGee, Burris principal and chairman, said.

"It appears the goal was not to cause great damage or harm," McGee said. "Nothing was missing from the school."

University police, Delaware County bomb squad and FBI helped secure the building after discovery of the vandalism, and power was returned later that day. School resumed normal operations Wednesday, and has not had any problems since then.

McGee said the act was probably intended only shut down the school for a day, and the suspects must have had a key, because they were able to access the electrical room without leaving signs of forced entry. The school has five security cameras videotaping entrances, but McGee said they did not provide any evidence to help identify suspects. McGee said the school changed all locks, but has not adopted any new security policies.

"If people did have a key ... now that key is no longer functioning," McGee said. "Things are pretty much the same. We are keeping our eyes and ears open for any leads."

Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said an investigation is progressing.
