Sororities offer Orientation Night

Women ask questions, learn about greek life before recruitment

Going Greek doesn't have to mean stressing out, said Abby Ronk, president of Kappa Delta sorority.

With formal sorority recruitment week beginning Sunday, the Panhellenic Council will have a Sorority Recruitment Orientation Night to help interested students get more specifics about sororities and Greek life Thursday at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom at 9:30 p.m.

Orientation Night is an opportunity for women who have already signed up to be in a sorority to find out what and when events take place next week, said Kori Knoll, recruitment chairwoman of the Panhellenic Council.

"Pi Chi's will act as counselors or mentors and answer questions the women might have about sororities," she said.

Pi Chi's are women who are already in a sorority but become unaffiliated with their house for the week-long recruitment.

The night is a chance for women to ask specific questions, Ronk said. The women will be divided into groups based on where they live on campus and will stay with these women during the recruitment process, she said.

"I think this is a great way for women to meet each other and the Pi Chi's early, because the Pi Chi's are their main adviser," Ronk said. "It's important to break the ice and meet each other so the women aren't as nervous."

Orientation Night is held at the Student Center because it was a place where women could go to learn about all the houses at one time, Knoll said.

Because the sororities do not have individual houses, events must be held elsewhere.

"The Student Center also provides a place to put all the sororities on an even playing field because the sororities have no houses," Knoll said. "The [alumnae] banded together and stated that if not all the sororities were capable of having enough money to build houses then none of the sororities would have houses," she said.

When women sign up for Greek life, they understand there are not any houses.

In the past there has been a favorable response because everyone is nervous and unsure about things, so the women appreciate the help, Ronk said. Hopefully there will be a good turnout, she said.
