OUR VIEW: Face the facts

Ball State University was able to access Facebook again after an equipment testing caused problems opening the site on campus.

It returned with some new and disconcerting features.

While the changes to Facebook make it seem like the ideal place for stalkers to glean information about people, it is ultimately up to each individual to limit how much a potential stalker could see.

When viewing the site, the added and somewhat creepy features are obvious:

Any change made in Facebook is listed and then highlighted within each profile. So if your best friend breaks up with her boyfriend, you'll know as soon as it's official on Facebook, complete with a cute little heart.

Updates are gathered and displayed on one page -ยก- everything from new friendships to additional photos in albums. Your personal life is now syndicated to your friends.

Some people might want to reconsider how much personal information they list on their profiles. Or, limit so only friends can see their entire profiles.

If you have listed your phone number and address in your profile, it has always been there for everyone to see.

If you have someone creepy in your friends list, reconsidering you definition of friend could be in order.

Facebook does have several privacy settings that users can enable to ensure better privacy. These settings have always been there.

You just have to use them.

And, if limiting a profile is not enough, stalkers and potential stalkers can be completely blocked in the privacy settings.

It's up to each person to decide just how much personal information they want to share on Facebook.

This updated Facebook design is just an example of how easily that information can be obtained.
