Mud volleyball extends registration

Chairwoman says fewer teams result of other activities

When Ball State University students dive in the mud and dress in interesting attire it means one thing: it is Mud Volleyball Tournament time. After four days of preparation, the 19th annual Mud Volleyball Tournament will begin Saturday outside of the Schmidt and Wilson Halls.

From 1 p.m. until 4 p.m., Ball State students can get muddy, make friends and have a good time. The tournament will continue Sunday from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Approximately 80 teams are already signed up, but registration will be extended until noon on Friday, Vicka Bell-Robinson, residence hall director of Botsford and Swinford halls, said. Times are subject to change based on the number of teams that end up registering, she said.

This year there is a smaller bracket of teams compared to previous years when about 100 teams participated, Keyonna Lloyd, chairwoman, said.

"We normally have the tournament this week, but we think there are fewer teams this year because the Purdue versus Ball State football game and sorority rush are the same week," she said.

The field allows for 128 teams, and the extended deadline is also for coed teams not just all-female teams.

"This year we opened the field to teams of all women, not just sororities and Woodworth," Bell-Robinson said. "We made it this way in order to get more teams to sign up and because last year people said they had difficulties finding teams with at least one guy."

The event is sponsored by Outfitter clothing store and Botsford and Swinford halls. WCRD will broadcast both days.

Each team consists of six to 12 players. There is a $25 entry fee, as well as a $15 sportsmanship fee that will be refunded at the end of the tournament to teams who follow the rules, Bell-Robinson said.

All proceeds will go to the Muncie Civic Theater, she said. The event is free and volunteers are welcome, she said.

Participants can also purchase long-sleeved T-shirts for $12, short-sleeved T-shirts for $10 and regular or cheerleader shorts for $12. Shorts and the long-sleeved T-shirt combination is $22 and shorts and the short-sleeved T-shirt combination is $20.
