Lazor Rain takes title, tops 84 teams at 19th annual Mud Volleyball Tournament

The Mud Volleyball Tournament ended Sunday with the final two teams, Lazor Rain and MFC Dirt Bags flopping around in mud one-foot deep at the volleyball courts before heading off to the showers.

After a 2-1 match, Lazor Rain won the 19th annual Ball State University Mud Volleyball Tournament. The six member team defeated five teams and a total of 83 teams through a process of bracket elimination. The matches took place on Saturday and Sunday behind Johnson Complex.

Team member Ryan Pickell, a sophomore telecommunications major said he was excited for the team's overall victory.

"We came in hoping to win it," Pickell said. "After we made it into the final four we felt pretty good about winning it ... It's a lot of fun cause it's something you don't do everyday."

The five sophomores and lone freshman began forming a team last year when five teammates played mud volleyball for the first time together. Steven Mui, a sophomore biochemistry and pre-medicine major said the team began when all the members lived in the same dorm.

"The girls were on the third floor in Botsford, and the guys were on the third in Swinford and we picked up one freshman [this year]" Mui said.

The five lost in 2005 after they made the final four. Leslie Collins, a sophomore majoring in elementary education, said winning this years tournament was one of her goals.

"We are totally competitive," Collins said. "It was my goal for this year ... It was a pretty good time. I've known them since last year"

"When it got warm it made it a lot easier to play," Pickell Said. "When it's cold out, it's a horrible and all you're thinking about is your feet are freezing."

The tournament ended with each member of Lazor Rain kissing the 2006 Mud Volleyball trophy.

"I've kissed every trophy I've ever won," Mui said. "I thought hey, keep the tradition going."
