FOOTBALL: Questionable calls lead to loss for Chippewas

Mid-American Conference struggles in opening weekend

Central Michigan University coach Brian Kelly will be answering questions about Thursday night's opener against Boston College for a long time.

Two questionable play calls have drawn the ire of Central Michigan fans. The first occurred in the second quarter. With Boston College leading 10-3. Kelly decided to go for it on 4th-and-8 from its own 28-yard line. After an incomplete pass from CMU quarterback Dan Lefevour, Boston College scored four plays later to make the score 17-3.

Central Michigan closed the gap to 31-24 late in the fourth quarter and got the ball back with a minute and a half left. The Chippewas decided to get fancy, lining up in what would be best described as a "swinging gate" with the center and quarterback at the far hash mark and the rest of the line in the middle of the field. However, it looked like Central Michigan had not practiced the play at all. There was mass confusion and Lefevour ended up throwing an interception to end Central Michigan's chance at victory.

"It's not necessarily the play but the execution of the play," Kelly said. "What was poor about it was the coaching of it. From my standpoint that's what I look at critically. Obviously I didn't do a very good job."

GARRETT'S WORLD

Lost in Ohio State University's 35-12 dismantling of Northern Illinois University was the performance of NIU running back Garrett Wolfe.

Wolfe had a huge day against the Buckeyes' revamped defense, rushing for 171 yards and 114 yards receiving. Unfortunately, most of the damage was done after the Buckeyes had established a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter. Huskie coach Joe Novak said the rest of the offense would need to get involved.

"Garrett played out of sight," he said. "What we need to do is get him some help and get the ball to our receivers and tight ends in the passing game. We put the defense in terrible field position and they got some big scores on us. I was disappointed in the way we played."

CUBIT HURT AGAIN

Western Michigan University quarterback Ryan Cubit was injured for the second straight year in a 39-20 loss to Indiana University.

The sixth-year senior suffered a laceration in his right hand and will miss the next 2 games against the University of Toledo and the University of Virginia. Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit said he hopes Ryan Cubit will be back for its game against Temple University. Thomas Peregrin will start for the Broncos on Saturday.

"[Peregrin] did OK," he said. "He struggled in the first 3 series. It's the first time he's played major conference football."

Peregrin finished 9 of 12 for 51 yards and a touchdown.

QUARTERBACK CAROUSEL

Eastern Michigan University will continue to employ a two-quarterback system. Both Tyler Jones and Andy Schmitt played in the game against Ball State University on Thursday night. Schmitt, however, didn't come in until Jones left the game early in the second half, after Jones sprained the AC joint in his shoulder.

Before he left the game, Jones ran for 164 yards against Ball State, but EMU coach Jeff Genyk said he was unhappy with some of Jones' decisions.

"The first quarter of the game we called four or five passes," Genyk said. "We had players wide open downfield and he decided to tuck it and run. I think we really have to make plays."

Jones is not expected to miss any playing time.
