Wireless internet, power out across campus early Thursday morning

Source of outage still undetermined

Indiana Michigan Power is investigating the cause of a brief blackout this morning on the Ball State University campus.

At 1:09 a.m., Ball State's electrical system noted a one-to two-second power lapse for both campus substations.

Facilities Planning Electrical Engineer Jack Willis said the power outage sent the system into emergency mode, tranferring the power to the Uninterruptible Power Supply system, which is used to keep some phone lines, the Robert Bell computer system and emergency lights on during blackouts.

However, the wireless system was not on the back-up system. At 7:30 a.m., crews worked to get the wireless Internet system back up. Vernon Draper, assistant director of computing, said as of 2 p.m. today, more than 99 percent of the system was working again.

Fire and security alarms echoed in some campus buildings, including Bracken Library, following the power outages.

After losing and regaining power, workers at Bracken Library asked students to leave.

Junior Katrin Hoffman was in the building when the power went out.

"I was on the first floor in the corner, and I was scared," she said.

Outages were also reported near campus.

Willis said a representative from Indiana Michigan Power hoped to know the reason for the outage by 3 p.m.
