Power company investigating Thursday power outage

Indiana Michigan Power is investigating the cause of a brief blackout Thursday morning on the Ball State University campus.

At 1:09 a.m., Ball State's electrical system noted a one-to two-second power lapse for both campus substations. The account representative from Indiana Michigan Power said the outage lasted for 12 seconds, Willis said.

Facilities Planning Electrical Engineer Jack Willis said the power outage sent the system into emergency mode, tranferring the power to the Uninterruptible Power Supply system, which is used to keep some phone lines, the Robert Bell computer system and emergency lights on during blackouts.

However, the wireless network was not on the back-up system. At 7:30 a.m., crews worked to get the wireless Internet system back up. Vernon Draper, assistant director of computing, said as of 2 p.m. Thursday, more than 99 percent of the system was working again.

Fire and security alarms echoed in some campus buildings, including Bracken Library, following the power outages. After losing and regaining power, workers at Bracken Library asked students to leave.

Junior Katrin Hoffman was in the building when the power went out.

"I was on the first floor in the corner, and I was scared," she said.

Outages were also reported near campus.

"At this time they do not have any obvious reason as to why it occurred," Willis said referring to Indiana Michigan Power. "They are inspecting their line and equipment to see if there was any obvious cause or damage that needs ot be repaired."

There were also reports of more power outages Thursday night on McGalliard Road.
