OUR VIEW: Redefined?

AT?ISSUE:?University should reassess ability to commit to slogan

With a newer president, new provost and new tagline, Ball State University is aiming to redefine education -ยก- a seemingly hefty feat, considering education has been around for - well, pretty much as long as people have been around.

But in this ambitious ad campaign, the university might be biting off more than it is ready to chew.

"Education Redefined," the university's new tagline, highlights priorities President Jo Ann Gora has set, such as immersive learning and Building Better Communities initiatives. By encouraging more outside-the-classroom, traditional experiences, Ball State is pushing students to new levels of learning. But it only goes so far. These programs are good for students and the university, but they aren't defining it.

The tagline targeted mainly toward high school students and parents, makes it seem as if education is something easily manipulated.

Ball State is attempting to set itself apart. To redefine the university, however, Ball State has to get out of planning stages and put some things into action. It can be redefined, but not without a lot of work and active duty.

Case in point: the Core Curriculum. More than four years in the making, the revised curriculum could redefine the education Ball State offers. But we're still waiting.
