Cardinals open 82nd season against Eastern Michigan

If tonight's game against Eastern Michigan University is anything like last year's, it's going to be a nail-biter.

Last time these two conference foes faced off, Ball State University found itself down 25-7 midway through the fourth quarter. Eight furious minutes and three Joey Lynch touchdown passes later, the Cardinals escaped Ypsilanti, Mich., with a 26-25 victory.

"For three and a half quarters, they really got after us pretty good," Lynch said. "We were able to get some plays going in the middle of the fourth quarter that swung the momentum. It was wild. Everything started clicking and everything we envisioned for the whole game started taking place then."

Lynch connected with Dante Love with 12 seconds left to seal a Cardinal victory. Eastern Michigan will have to replace the graduated Matt Bohnet as quarterback. In that game, Bohnet was 22-for-32, passing for 310 yards and a touchdown. To replace him, the Eagles will employ a two-quarterback system. Ball State coach Brady Hoke said going against the Eagles spread offense could present a challenge.

"With [Jones], it's like having two backs in the backfield," Hoke said. "It gives you a little bit of problem defensively because the quarterback runs and the ability to spread you out because of four or three wide receivers. We've got to rebound and respond to those plays."

Eastern Michigan's go-to-guy is senior wide receiver Eric Deslauriers. The 6-foot-4, 25-year-old
