CAP dean to focus on teaching after Spring Semester

Bilello wants to work on painting, teaching in coming years

The dean of the College of Architecture and Planning will step down into a faculty role at the end of the Spring Semester after six years leading the college.

Joseph Bilello has spent the last 20 years in educational positions, and said he now intends to focus on painting, research and his family. He is building a painting studio in New Mexico, which is almost completed, and said he plans to visit there often.

"My hope is to stay here and teach and have a consulting practice, to paint and to be a father," he said. "The demands of this job have been such that it has made it real difficult to do those other loves of mine."

During Bilello's time as dean, CAP has seen a lot of growth, he said. Architecture and landscape architecture became nationally certified programs, a new master program was created and new faculty has been brought into the college. He said he is also proud of the CAP Indianapolis Center and how the university is now extending more programs to the city.

Bilello credits the length of his term for some of the advancements implemented in his term.

"It's gotten to the point where that's a fairly good term of office, particularly for someone in a professional school when you have a fair good passion," -áhe said.

He said he has no intentions to leave Ball State, and said he has a very strong commitment to a program he is proud of.

Terry King, provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, said he is gathering information for creating a search committee. There will be a meeting concerning the search next week, he said, and candidates will be announced either late Fall Semester or Spring Semester.

"It is very, very critical for this college to have a transition plan," King said. "We want to take advantage of the fact that Dean Bilello will be with us."

The open search for a new dean is one of the first projects King is undertaking, having only begun work at Ball State on July 17. He said he already has a list of people being considered for the search committee.

As Bilello intends to continue teaching at Ball State, he said he will assist the new dean with anything necessary.

"You try to create a very smooth and seamless transition," he said.

"Typically, you make yourself available to the new dean for whatever kind of counsel necessary."
