Annual show marked by musical diversity, variety of selections

Summer chorus brings community, university together

The Ball State University Summer Chorus, a combined group of singers from Ball State University and the Muncie community, will perform a varied selection of works Tuesday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Sursa Hall.

Returning director Jeffrey Pappas said that this year's annual show will be marked by variety in musical selection as well as chorus members.

"It really is a true community group," Pappas said. "We have a real diversity of talent, and I think that's what makes it successful."

Pappas said that chorus members were culled from the Ball State undergraduate and graduate music schools, Muncie Masterworks Chorale, local church choirs and the Planet Earth singers among others.

Grad student and chorus member Chris Brush attested to the musical diversity of the show.

"There's a lot of musical variety, ranging across 500 years, different continents and vastly different styles," Brush said.

Musical selections include Haydn's "Creation," Broadway favorite "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," a Gaelic prayer and a lively spiritual number that chorus member Walter Welch described as "a foot-stomping, hand clapping experience."

Welch, a retired former RCA manager, is one of two soloists in the concert and will be performing "Without a Song" from the musical "Great Day."

"I'm so thankful for Ball State having this outreach to the community and giving community members an opportunity to participate in the choir," Welch said.

Welch said that participating in the choir has been a therapeutic experience for him.

"When we enter into a song, we become conscious, and we focus on it, and it helps to take our mind from other distractions and to celebrate the presence of the moment," Welch said.

Assisting Pappas in choral direction will be doctoral student Jill Burleson. Grad student Brian Nabors is the administrative assistant for the chorus.

The Summer Chorus concert is free and open to the public. Parking will be available in the McKinley Ave. parking garage.
