GENERATION Y: Newest fashion trend: baring it all

I don't often feel compelled to give a shout-out to the fashion masses. First of all, I am guilty of more than a few fashion offenses myself and secondly, I am usually able to ignore what's "hip" and "trendy" with little effort. However, recent events have caused me some concern over the direction of fashion in the women's department. While women's fashion has a long tradition of being criticized and held to fast-fleeting expensive standards that are almost impossible to keep up with, they have mostly been centered around the concept of draping cloth on your body. In the past few years, fashion has left much to be desired, literally. I for one have had a strong desire recently to see more clothes on women, but it appears I am so out of date that wearing clothes to cover your body is longer in style.

I was able to handle the Romanesque white skirts with halter-tops phase and Mediterranean folk art shirts with Capri's craze with little confusion. And after I was visually assaulted by a parade of female freshman wearing enough sequins to scare my neurotic grandmother, I just laughed. But now - I mean seriously folks, have we run out of ideas? Is that why our bare bodies are becoming the new fashion trend? Are we attempting to merge modern fashion with ancient images of bronze-skinned athletic Olympians? Because many of us do not have dark olive complexions, houses in the Greek Isles or clear enough schedules to be full-time Gods and Goddesses. Don't get me wrong; I am a big fan of the human form -ยก- in its element. People at the beach should frolic in their oblivious or self-confident half-naked forms and feel uninhibited at private house parties where the idea is to be sexually expressive. I expect to see carefree bodies moving about in backyards or in neighborhoods on a hot summer day. But have some courtesy for your fellow citizens, classmates and teachers and please don't expose your butt cracks in public places.

What else can be said about this? Many of us have been patiently waiting more than four years for low rise jeans to go away, and they just keep getting lower and lower. In fact they seem to have spawned, in collaboration with Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears, a teenaged sub-culture of scantily clad, orange-skinned, tattooed butts and stomachs. While this trend may be fabulous in flawless Hollywood, most women I see are sitting right in front of me everyday in class with neon pink thongs, half of their butt hanging out and a predictable tribal tattoo - very distracting in a not-so-fabulous way. Aside from the obvious risk factors such as getting a regrettable, permanent tattoo and increasing the chance of skin cancer, this new fashion trend projects an image of insecure conformity, leading many people to assume things that may not be true. Of course if you feel the need to send a message that you are sexually promiscuous and have lapses in good judgment (often politely disguised in comments suck as "She's, like, really wild" or "She's totally hot") don't be surprised if there are many people who will attempt to take advantage. That being said Feeling confident and sexy is important, however it is also important to be aware of others around you. While I am sure this article won't have a tremendous impact on the continuing sales of super low-rise flares, or even those who love to wear them, I hope some women get inspired to express their beauty more individually and creatively.
