Administrator takes interim provost spot, looks at CMU

Dean of extended education named as finalist in search

A top Ball State University administrator stepping up to fill another administrator's absence might be leaving a vacancy of his own.

Frank Sabatine, interim associate provost and dean of the school of extended education, takes over for Interim Provost Deb Balogh today. Balogh's last day on campus was Wednesday, which was the same day Central Michigan announced Sabatine as a finalist for an open position.

Central Michigan has been looking for a vice president and executive director of off-campus programs since April, and Sabatine was one of two final candidates named Wednesday, according to a press release from Central Michigan.

Sabatine refused to comment on the announcement when reached at home Wednesday night.

He will visit the Mount Pleasant, Mich., campus June 23

During his visit, Sabatine will meet with the president, provost and other administrators, as well as participate in a forum open to the campus.

Marvis Lary, chair of Central Michigan's search committee, said Sabatine and his fellow finalist, Michael Stockstill from Boise state University, are both strong candidates.

"We are looking for an individual who is experienced at the senior management level, someone who brings the experience, leadership and vision that will propel the CMU off-campus programs forward into the competitive market," Lary said.

Sabatine has been dean of the school of extended education since 2000 and interim associate provost since June 2005. Sabatine has also worked as the Strategic Planning Task Force meeting facilitator.

Lary said these positions signified qualities needed in the Central Michigan opening - an effective team leader and an excellent communicator.

After both candidates visit campus, Lary said the search committee will review evaluations made by the campus community and decide which candidates are acceptable. The name or names will be passed on to the president and provost, who will make the final decision.

"Obviously, we would like to fill the position as soon as possible, but the final date will depend on the availability of the selected candidate," Lary said.

Sabatine is expected to perform provost duties until July 17, when Terry King officially takes over as provost. King was selected in March after a 10-month search.
