BASEBALL: Cardinals prepare for tournament play after losing final game of regular season

Ball State heads into MAC tourney with 16-9 record

The Ball State University baseball team finished the regular season Saturday with a loss to Central Michigan University but ended the season on a high note winning 12 of the final 14 games. -áThe Cardinals will have the No. 3 seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament and will take on the No. 4 seed ,Western Michigan University, Wednesday at 10 a.m. -áKent State University, the No. 1 seed and host of the tournament, will take on No. 6 Eastern Michigan University. Central Michigan earned the No. 2 seed and will play No. 5 Miami University.-áCoach Greg Beals said his team has been ready for this tournament all season.-á"Our psyche is very good," Beals said. "We set goals for the tournament all season long, and we are playing good baseball at the right time."-áThe Cardinals played well in MAC play this season, finishing with a record of 16-9, earning victories against each of the teams in the tournament, including home sweeps of Miami and Western Michigan.-áSenior first baseman Brad Miller says the team is confident going into the tournament.-á"The last three weeks we've been on a roll, and we're taking that confidence with us into the tournament," Miller said.-áIf the Cardinals defeat Western Michigan in the first game of the double-elimnation tournament, they go on to play the winner of the Central Michigan-Miami game. If the Cards fall to Western Michigan, they will take on the winner of the Kent State-Eastern Michigan game. A loss in that game would end the cardinals season.Beals said he feels that with so many good teams in the tournament there is no clear favorite to win.-á"I think it's a crapshoot," Beals said. "I don't think there's a favorite. There's a lot of parity in our conference. Whoever gets hot and plays the best will win it."-áMiller added that the Cardinals are well-prepared to play any team they come across. -á"We've played everyone; we know what everyone has," Miller said. "I think we have as good of a chance as anyone to win the whole thing."-áAfter the Ball State-Western Michigan game Wednesday, Kent State and Eastern Michigan take the field at 1 p.m., while Central Michigan and Miami get their game underway at 4 p.m.
