MEN'S TENNIS: MAC champion Ball State has first-round bye

With the start of the Mid-American Conference Tournament scheduled to begin today in Toledo, Ohio, the Cardinals will have to wait to see who their opponent will be.

The No. 1 seeded Ball State University men's tennis team (18-6, 5-0 MAC) will face the winner of the University at Buffalo and Northern Illinois University at 10 a.m. Friday in the second round of the tournament. Buffalo, the No. 4 seed, is 11-7 overall with a 2-3 record in the MAC, whereas the No. 5 seed Northern Illinois is 5-13 with a 1-4 MAC record. The Cardinals defeated both teams 7-0 this season.

Coach Bill Richards said his team will be ready for whoever its opponent will be.

"It honestly doesn't make any difference to me," Richards said. "It's not going to make any difference to our guys, I don't think, one way or another. We'll just be ready for whoever."

Richards said that a victory for the top-seeded Cardinals should earn the team a 3-seed in the NCAA tournament but cautions against his team getting overly hyped for the tournament.

"I think you have to play with a little greater sense of urgency than what you normally do, but at the same time you have to stay within yourself and within the moment," he said.
