There will be no ranked teams on the docket for the women's tennis team this weekend. After playing Kansas and Indiana on back-to-back weekends, they will get a break of sorts as IPFW comes to town for a Friday evening match.
IPFW's (1-1) two opponents thus far have both played the Cardinals. Ball State University (3-2) disposed of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Dayton 7-0, while IPFW lost to Dayton 7-0 and beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee 4-3.
Sophomore Jennifer Pollack said her teammates can't look past IPFW.
"They aren't as challenging," Pollack said. "It can be a challenge, but they aren't the heavy hitters that IU is. They aren't ranked 12th in the country. The pressure falls on us."
To prepare her team for the Mastodons, coach Kathy Bull pushed her team in the weight room and in conditioning this week. Bull said she doesn't know too much about Friday's opponent.
"I guess I'm not going to worry that much about IPFW," Bull said. "I'm probably gong to put a little bit more focus on my team. I'm going to count on my team being the stronger team. We're going to play with some confidence and we're looking forward to a little time off."
The match against IPFW is the only one for the Cardinals this weekend. For IPFW, Ashley Coulson (No. 1), Sachi Janek (No. 3) and Hanna Hager (No. 4) are the only ones who have recorded a singles win thus far.
Pollack said the team continues to work on one of their weak points, deep ground strokes.
"This week we worked on depth and staying down on the ball again," Pollack said. "IPFW is a different opponent, so hopefully we'll be able to work on it during the match."
Match time is 6:30 p.m. at the Muncie YMCA Northwest.
