Despite losing its last two games, the women's basketball team has high expectations for the rest of the season.
Ball State University has five games remaining, all of which are against Mid-American Conference West Division opponents. The goal: to win all five games and finish the season in the same fashion as it began.
Coach Tracy Roller said achieving this goal won't be easy.
"It's tougher than the start, but at this point we need to be competitive in every game," Roller said. "It's definitely attainable. When we play as well as we have shown we can, it is definitely attainable."
Ball State (13-9, 6-5 MAC) will play Toledo at 7 p.m. tonight at Worthen Arena. Ball State has lost its last two games and has slipped into third place in the MAC West Division. Toledo (9-12, 4-7 MAC) is last in the division, but snapped its three-game losing streak with an 81-49 win over Ohio on Saturday.
"I think we're both in a position where we kind of have our back against the wall right now," Roller said, "We're both kind of in a must-win situation, which makes it ideal for us because we're playing at home."
Erica Cotton has led Ball State in scoring in five of its last seven games. She scored 16 points against Bowling Green on Saturday and is second on the team in scoring during conference games (11.3 points per game).
Cotton said the Cards are focused on playing a consistent game against Toledo.
"We know we have to start matching the other team's offense," she said. "For some reason that has been a problem for us even though we're an offensive team. That's an easy thing to do, but we haven't put it all together yet."
The Cardinals set a school record when they started the season with five wins. Their longest winning streak since then is three games, which happened against MAC opponents.
The Cards will play three of their five games at home. Roller said she is looking for a strong finish.
"Toledo is just the first of five games that we have to take care of business," she said.
