WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards use balanced scoring to earn fifth conference win

DeMuth registers seventh double-double of season as Ball State wins on the road

Julie DeMuth led four Ball State University players in double-figures with 18 points as the Cardinals beat Ohio on the road Tuesday, 80-63.

DeMuth grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and played 32 minutes despite drawing four fouls. It was her seventh double-double of the season.

Erica Cotton (17 points), Stephanie Douglas (12) and Becca Bajorek (10) helped lead the Cards to their fourth highest scoring total of the season.

"We had a great start," coach Tracy Roller said. "We did a good job of when they made a run, we got back on top. It was a really good team win."

Ball State (12-7, 5-3 Mid-American Conference West) shot 46 percent from the field and was 86 percent from the charity stripe. The Cardinals bench outscored the Bobcats 31-7, led by Douglas and Bajorek.

"Our depth was the key to the win," Roller said.

Kelsey Corbin scored six points and had two assists during 31 minutes in her first game back from injury. She missed the first game of her career on Saturday with tendinitis in her feet.

"Kelsey really set the tone defensively," Roller said. "It was great to have her back."

Roller said Corbin did a good job stopping Ohio point guard Quintana Ward, who had three assists and four turnovers.

"She stopped their transition game by getting [Ward] stopped early in transition, which was something we were worried about coming in."

Domenica Silva led Ohio with 27 points on 9-of-12 shooting. She added seven rebounds and added a block.

"She really went to work in the post on us and got a couple key rebound putbacks," Roller said. "When she started having a run we got it under control. I really like how we handled their runs."

Ball State led by 11 at halftime. The Cards used an 11-0 run to lead by 20 points with two minutes remaining.

The win keeps Ball State in a tie for second place with Western Michigan. Ohio drops to 7-12 overall and 4-4 in the MAC.

Eastern Michigan leads the MAC West at 7-0.

"I really thought this was a big week for us in terms of getting separation in the division," Roller said. "Going on the road is really tough and I'm just happy we're playing well at the right time."
