TRACK: Scully sets school record

Ball State competes well on road in Iowa,

Highlighted by another school record, the women's indoor track and field team fared well this weekend at the annual Iowa State Classic.

Jill Scully set a new school record in the 3,000 meters (9:31.43) as the Cardinals fought hard against the surplus of teams in Ames, Iowa. This record was the second in as many weeks for Scully as she broke the school record in the 5,000 meters last weekend at the Meyo Invitational. Scully held the previous record at 3,000 meters and bested it by over five seconds.

"[Scully] did a nice job of sticking her nose into a very competitive race and running with the leaders from the beginning," assistant coach Todd Lane said. "And the same can be said for a number of our runners today."

-áIt was a successful trip however, as several Cardinals placed high in their respective events.

Other than the impressive effort by Scully, Terri Abraham's long jump result was another NCAA provisional qualifying mark and was good enough to earn her fifth place. Sophomore Amber Williams finished in seventh place in the 200 meters (24.25), which was a personal record. A few other highlights included Voni Ferguson's eighth place finish in the 400 meters (55.58), Jeanne Roberts' 11th place in the 60 meter dash (7.66) and the 4x400 relay which came in at seventh place.

Like the weekend before there was no team scoring and thus very little feedback about any type of team result. The Cardinals pick back up with team scoring in their next test however, when they return back to Muncie for their final home meet. The Ball State Triangular is set for February 17, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

"This is the exciting part of the year as the many months of accumulation and preparation of training is realized," Lane said. "Workouts become shorter and the body begins to have an extra feeling of bounce to it."
