Standout performances highlighted the women's indoor track and field team's season closer Friday night. At the annual Ball State Triangular, Western Michigan edged Ball State University 106 to 105, while Miami finished in third with 87 points. Close races all evening spelled the difference as the Broncos and Cardinals stretched away from Miami and fought back and forth.
The meet had plenty of high notes for the Cardinals, however, as senior Jill Scully broke yet another record. Her time in the mile broke a Field Sports Building and a personal record for Scully. The time (4:55.70) was nearly a second faster than the old record set in 2004 (4:56.89), which was also hers. Scully said the main goal for the race however, was just to run hard and keep up with the leaders.
"The plan was really to just keep a steady pace," Scully said. "The leaders went out hard and I wanted to do 36 or 37 each (lap) and try to stay with them."
Along with Scully's impressive effort, junior Terri Abraham added a couple of highlights of her own in jumping to first place in the long jump (20-1 -+) while again hitting the NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Abraham also won the triple jump (40-2 -+) with a new personal record.
Among the other individual winners were: Voni Ferguson in the 400 meters (56.30), Nicole Hartford (10:19.00) in the 3,000, Amber Williams (7.20) for the 60 meter dash, and Jennifer McCoy (8.40) in the 60 hurdles.
Following Friday's meet, the team has now switched to preparing and focusing for the Mid-American Conference indoor championships, which take place Feb. 24-25 at Bowling Green.
The Triangular offered a glimpse of what it is going to take to reach the goals the Cardinals have set for themselves.
For many of the women's indoor track and field team, goals are obvious.
"I'll be perfectly honest, I want to get over there and win every race I can," sophomore Amber Williams said. "Mainly I want to do what's best for the team and I think by winning every one, that'll be good."
After completion of the conference championship, the Cardinals will then prepare for the outdoor track season.
