Student arrested on drug charges

Student posed as doctor's assistant to get pain medication, police say

A Ball State University student posed as a doctor's assistant to illegally acquire prescription drugs, state police reports.

Arthur James Kistner, 21, 11329 Rolling Springs Road, Carmel, was arrested on charges of obtaining and attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud or deceit. According to an arrest report from the Indiana State Police, Kistner called a Muncie pharmacy to obtain the prescription drug Vicoprofen, a pain killer.

Kistner declined to comment.

Earlier in January, Kistner "allegedly obtained one prescription," and in February, attempted to get the same drug, this time using a fictitious name, the report said.

Wayne Randolph, the pharmacist at the Muncie Osco Drug Store, where the incident occurred, said this situation did not happen too often.

"In this particular incident, we did get the police involved," he said.

Randolph said the pharmacy refused Kistner's second attempt and followed him to his car and wrote down the license plate number. The pharmacy reported the illegal activity to the state police on Feb. 13.

"We were suspicious when they called it in because they did not have proper information about the doctor," Randolph said.

He said the person did not know the out-of-town doctor's correct address, phone number or drug enforcement license number.

"It does not happen with local doctors because we know them," Randolph said. "When it does happen, it is usually trying to use an out-of-town doctor."

Randolph said people usually try to get drugs such as Vicodin or Valium to support a drug habit.

The case was turned over to the Delaware County Prosecutor's Office for review.
