At Issue: Men's volleyball, other teams deserve greater Cardinal support

Indiana is known as a basketball state - not a volleyball state.

But with Ball State University's undefeated men's volleyball team on the court, maybe it's time to change that.

Tuesday, the Cardinals broke five school records against Central State in a no-contest match. Sure, their opponents didn't put up the biggest fight, but the team still didn't let up on its performance.

In fact, in the nine three-game matches the team has played so far this year, only one other team was able to win any games against the Cardinals - meaning Ball State has won 28 of the 30 games it's played. And still, they haven't lost a match.

However, the men's volleyball team doesn't receive nearly the support of the 8-12 men's basketball team - or even the football team, which went 4-7 this fall. No Ball State athletics team receives the recognition or support those two sports receive, despite how successful the team might be or how exciting its events are.

Nearly every one of the nine sports currently in season have won their latest competitions and are in the midst of or on their ways to winning streaks. And strong, vocal student support would only make their victories that much easier to obtain - and then to celebrate.

This weekend, five teams are at home: Men's volleyball, gymnastics, women's basketball and men's and women's tennis.

Without traveling or spending any money, students can turn out to these competitions to show their support, their pride and their excitement when this university succeeds.

The members of the men's volleyball team, especially, would appreciate the help their fellow Cardinals could offer in their match against the Loyola Ramblers - the only other undefeated team in Division I.

Not only does it promise to be an exciting match, but the victory will be sweeter if it can be shared throughout Ball State's campus.

Indiana might never be a state known for its volleyball, but Ball State could at least be the place where all sports can find a solid fan base.
