Friday is Senior Night, family recognition night and the last home meet for the gymnastics team, as they take on Bowling Green and Michigan State. The team has had two weeks of hard workouts and no competitions, and is eager to display improvements made within that time.
The gymnasts were allowed more time to focus on the team as a whole. They implemented a new activity into the weekly practice schedule. One day a week, gymnasts of a specific class ranking got creative and came up with a team-building exercise.
Monday the sophomores were in charge of the exercise. They scattered objects across the floor and lead blindfolded teammates across without stepping on any of the objects. The sophomores chose this activity to focus on trusting teammates. Sophomore Brittany George said it also helped with listening.
"It helped us understand each other better, or more, because we had to listen to our teammates to get across," George said. "By listening to your teammates you can learn a lot about your own gymnastics and about their gymnastics styles."
George said the new exercises have allowed the team to get closer. Recognizing seniors Shauna Feeney and Jenny Carr is one way for the team to show strong relationships. The juniors were in charge of deciding on gifts for the seniors. The presentation will be after the meet.
Coach Lisa Simonton is excited to recognize the seniors and hopes to break an attendance record Friday night. Simonton said great improvements will be seen on bars, which have been a problem area for the team. She gave the gymnasts three days off of practice and said the down time allowed for even more upgrades.
"Monday was probably our best practice all year long," Simonton said. "They had three days off and it's amazing what off days can do for the body, mind, soul and spirit."
