Dean to visit other school as job finalist

Central Missouri State considers Hyman for head of Student Affairs

Associate Dean of Student Affairs Randy Hyman will visit Central Missouri State on Wednesday and Thursday to speak with students and interview for the position of Vice President of Student Affairs.

Hyman is one of three finalists for the position. The other two finalists are from Northeastern University and University of Kansas-Lawrence.

Hyman said he began talking with CMS in January when he was nominated for the position.

This is the second school Hyman has visited this semester regarding available Student Affairs positions. Though, he said he found out last week that he was no longer being considered for the position at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

He has talks going on with several other schools, he said. He would not comment on which schools. It is not unusual for schools to contact him about positions, and he considers them all, he said.

"It's the kind of thing that happens routinely in higher institutions," Hyman said. "For people, institutions to use networks to make contact with individuals who appear to be good candidates for the job."

Many institutions have contacted him about available positions over the years, Hyman said. If he does not receive a position at the other schools, he said he would continue at Ball State.

"I think just as a professional it's natural to explore any other opportunities that can give you professional growth," said Linda Wiley, director of Student Affairs and Activities. "It's something that most professionals do."

She said she could think of half a dozen people from her office who have left over time.

Kay Bales, dean of Student Affairs, said she supported anyone who finds new opportunities. When people do leave, their responsibilities are divided up until a new person is found, she said.

"We wish them well in any other institution," Bales said. "It is rare anyone is at one institution for the duration of his career."

Hyman applied to be Ball State dean of Student Affairs this summer. He became interim vice president for student affairs and enrollment management last January when the former vice president was asked to step down by President Jo Ann Gora. Hyman has worked at Ball State since 1989.
