As many might notice, there is an inherent bias to this list. The oldest film on the list ("The Empire Strikes Back") is only 26 years old. Yes, I'm ignoring the old, classic, black and white films of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. I beg your forgiveness.
10. "Desperado"This early Robert Rodriguez film - one of the best action pictures of the 90s - has a kiss that epitomizes the action film kiss. The action star and the sexy woman are in a chase of some sort and then bam! Cue intense kiss. And, of course, the fact that the sexy woman is Salma Hayek only adds to the perfection of the kiss.
9. "The Hours"This 2002 film that tells the story of three women all connected by the classic Virginia Woolf novel "Mrs. Dalloway" contains a very mysterious little kiss in one of the three stories. Mrs. Brown (Julianne Moore,) a depressed 50s housewife, comforts her neighbor who comes over for a brief visit. She kisses her softly in a way that seems to transcend a friendly kiss, but quietly hold back from a straightforward romantic kiss. Her neighbor's reaction afterwards is equally unclear as to feelings or intentions.
8. "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover"Peter Greenaway's amazing, shocking 1989 film is bursting with sexual energy. The wife and her lover carry on their affair quite literally under the thief's nose as they have erotic rendezvous in the restroom or the kitchen of the fancy, gourmet restaurant owned by the thief. The first kiss between the wife and her lover in the restaurant's women's restroom is amazing.
7. "Y Tu Mama Tambien"Now, this is a hard blurb to write because the particular kiss featured near the end of the movie is, well, interesting. All I'm going to say is that some friendships hold more intimacy than either friend is willing to admit.
6. "Amelie"This wonderful French romantic comedy is just bursting with memorable, amazing moments. One of them is the sequence at the end when the super-shy Parisian waitress Amelie comes face to face with the young man to which she's been drawn. The slow series of gentle kisses is endlessly tender and beautiful.
5. "Spider-man"You just knew that the upside-down kiss between Spider-man and Mary Jane was going to make the list. Kirsten Dunst's Mary Jane slides off part of Spider-man's mask and starts kissing him as he hangs by his webbing. Without doubt, it's the most erotic kiss of 21st century cinema.
4. "Chasing Amy"Writer/director Kevin Smith made his best film in this hilarious, touching story of a man falling in love with a lesbian. Their first kiss, outside as the rain pours down, is without a doubt the most passionate moment in all of Smith's films.
3. "Jackie Brown"Here's one that may come as a surprise to many. "Jackie Brown" is Quentin Tarantino's third film. Often it's given less respect than it deserves because it's not as flashy or wildly stylized as "Pulp Fiction," "Reservoir Dogs," or the "Kill Bill" films. "Jackie Brown" is Tarantino's most mature film, featuring his most mature characters. It may very well be my favorite Tarantino film. The story involves a flight attendant (Pam Grier in the title role) who, together with a bail bondsmen named Max Cherry (Robert Forster) tired of his job will steal a half million dollars from Brown's gun-running boss Ordell Robie (Samuel L. Jackson). Again, this kiss is one that is not straight romance. Throughout the whole film there's been a friendly, warm attraction between Max and Jackie. At the end, the two of them share a gentle, tender kiss. It's just wonderful.
2. "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back"The moment referred to here is, of course, that first kiss between Princess Leia and Han Solo. It's so satisfying because throughout the film and the first "Star Wars" movie we've seen that flirtation disguised as annoyance. The romance of the kiss is only enhanced by the end of the film when Han is frozen in carbonite.
1. "The Princess Bride""The Princess Bride" takes the cake because its final kiss at the end between the film's two star-crossed lovers is the epitome of the fairy tale. No other fairy tale film comes close.
