CLIMBING THE WALLS: Valentine's Day offers chance to appreciate everyone in your life

Valentine's Day is tomorrow, but according to a Feb. 5 article from The Herald News Online, about 64 percent of people wait until less than a week before the holiday to buy a gift for their special someones - and you might be one of those procrastinators. You could even be one of the people who waits until the actual day - or to be generous, the night before - to race into Walgreen's and grab a recently discounted box of heart-shaped candy and the fluffiest stuffed animal in the store.

Some say Valentine's Day is nothing but another commercial holiday that owes its popularity to Hallmark and Russell Stover Candies, but I disagree. It's a fun holiday - for your loved ones and even your coworkers - because it brings smiles to the faces of those who send or receive reminders that someone thinks they are special. If you want to let someone know you care, but you are short on time, have little money or don't have a creative idea, here are a few ideas that demonstrate you have a person's best interest - or at least the person's major - at heart.

For physical education or exercise science majors, invite them for a walk under the stars, where you can have a heart-to-heart talk about what has been going on in your lives lately. The world is so fast-paced sometimes that we forget how much a little communication helps to brighten our days.

Nursing students or pre-med majors will show concern at first when you tell them your heart is irregularly beating, but they'll have warm and fuzzy feelings when you say it's because their love makes your heart skip a beat. Go ahead, wipe that tear from your eye - it gets better.

While things in a college student's life might not always add up, you can assure the accounting or mathematical science majors they are important by creating your own mathematical equation. Assure your girlfriend that you + her = one fantastic relationship with twice the laughs of any other couple, and she'll never look at numbers the same.

If your boyfriend is a business major, design a love "business card" for him that he can keep in his wallet. It's cheesy, yes, but I'm sure it will give him a boost of confidence every time he admires it.

Speaking of admiring, those who major in or appreciate art might enjoy a personal sketch or drawing - remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that even includes your artistic skills. Music students would be in tune with the idea of having a song on the radio dedicated to them, and English majors might enjoy a heartfelt poem that expresses your feelings for them.

Tell your geography-major boyfriend you love him more than anything in the world by writing it on a map that he can use in his studies.

For the even more worldly significant others, memorize a song in the language in which they're majoring - but keep in mind that you're now in a time crunch, so you better be a fast learner.

Learning is near and dear to the hearts of education majors, but you can win their hearts by offering a homemade valentine that rivals any given by their students. Teachers will receive more valentines tomorrow than any other group, but you can ensure that you'll be teacher's pet by sneaking your valentine into her lesson plan.

What makes Valentine's Day special is personalizing it for those you love - and while these ideas are mentioned for a partner, there is no reason they cannot be tailored for friends or family, too. If someone makes you feel special on a regular basis, take the time and thought to return the favor with something special from you.

Happy Valentine's Day!
