WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Women focus on team defense

Ball State forgets about close losses, focuses on practice

The women's basketball team isn't dwelling on the past.

After two consecutive overtime losses, Ball State University isn't worried about confidence issues. Instead, the Cardinals used Monday and Tuesday practicing and preparing for Western Michigan.

Senior center Raechelle Hampton said the Cards are entering tonight's road game with a lot of confidence despite recent losses.

"We just have to execute," Hampton said. "We're focusing on us because we didn't play well at Toledo. So we want to get back to what we're good at."

Ball State (7-5, 0-1 Mid-American Conference) is coming off overtime losses to Santa Clara University (70-69) and to the University of Toledo (83-79).

"Everybody knows we had some games we should have won and we need to learn from those experiences," coach Tracy Roller said. "We had a great practice [Monday]. The team knows its early in the conference, so losing our confidence now doesn't really make any sense because it's very early."

Western Michigan (4-8, 1-0 MAC) has three of the conference's top seven scorers. Lindsey Brown ranks third in the MAC in scoring (16.8) and second in rebounding (9.2).

Casey Rost is fifth in the conference in scoring (15.5) and Carrie Moore ranks seventh (14.7).

"I think those three are such great players that I don't know if you can completely stop any three of them," Roller said. "We're going to make a concerted effort to play team defense and stop the team."

Julie DeMuth continues to lead Ball State in scoring (13) and rebounding (9.3).

DeMuth said practices have really helped the Cards.

"Our practices have been really competitive," DeMuth said. "We're really getting in here and working hard, so by the time we play Western our confidence will really be up."
