TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals tie with Boilers for top spot at Edmonds Cup

Long jumper gets third straight win, Meyo Invite up next

Holding nothing back, the Ball State University women's indoor track and field team had yet another impressive performance on Saturday at the annual Gene Edmonds Cup. The event, held at Purdue, was nothing short of spectacular for the Cardinals as they added another first-place finish to their record by tying with Purdue for top honors.

"We knew it would be neck-and-neck the whole time," coach Sue Parks said. "And it went right down to the end, and ended up in a tie."

The Cardinals and Boilermakers battled back and forth all afternoon.

The Cardinals took home eight first-place awards and scored a team total of 170 points. Indiana State followed the two winners with a score of 122, while Wisconsin-Milwaukee finished with 70 points.

Amber Williams led the squad with two individual first-place honors in the 200-meter (24.88) and 60-meter hurdles (8.45) as well as another first-place in the 4x400 meter relay. Other first place winners included; Jeanne Roberts (60, 7.62), Voni Ferguson (400, 56.67), Amanda Ponsot (800, 2:15.08), and Jill Scully (3,000, 9:57.37).

Junior Terri Abraham achieved her third straight victory as she added another first-place finish in the long jump (19-09 -+) on Saturday. Abraham failed to reach the NCAA provisional qualifying mark she hit over the past couple weeks, but ended up victorious nonetheless.

The next challenge for the Cardinals is February 3-4 at the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame.

Keeping the level of consistency is now the factor for the Cardinals as they move further and further into the season. The quick, successful start has led to a lot of optimism and puts the Cardinals in a good position to do well in the bigger meets to come.

The meet Saturday was yet another obstacle in the way of the Cardinals and their hopes for major success, but they met the challenge head on and succeeded.

"It went pretty well," Parks said. "It went right down to the end and we were happy with the results."
