Ball State University's women's indoor track and field team cruised past the rest of the field Friday as they won the Bowling Green Triangular.
The Cardinals won nine events on their way to out-scoring the rest of the field by 81.5 points in their first scored meet of the year. Ball State had a score of 226 followed by Cincinnati (144.50), Bowling Green (126.50), Dayton (71), Xavier (25), and IPFW (17).
As the meet rolled along on Friday, the Cardinals looked better and better in comparison to last week at the Ball State Open. Nerves ran strong with the level of competition much higher than last week, but the Cardinals were able to turn their effort into a well-performed meet.
"We definitely showed a lot of improvement from last week," coach Sue Parks said. "I was happy with the way we performed in all events."
The Cardinals had many standout performers. Junior Terri Abraham had two individual victories, including a personal record and her second NCAA provisional qualifying mark of the season, with a jump of 20-04-+ in the long jump event. She followed that up with a victory in the triple jump (39-03) as well.
Sophomore Amber Williams also had two individual victories in the 60-meter hurdles (8.56) and the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.25.
Other individual winners included Rose Lehe in the 3,000 (10:11.73) and Jill Scully in the 1,600 (5:01.19), as well as Jeanne Roberts in the 60-meter dash (7.59), Voni Ferguson in the 400 (56.59), and Amanda Ponsot in the 800 (2:17.86).
Friday's meet in Bowling Green was the first of many meets on the road to come this season for the Cardinals. The next meet for the team comes Saturday in West Lafayette, at the Edmonds Cup. The following week is the Meyo Invitational on February 3-4 at Notre Dame.
Though the women's indoor track and field team has not been overly flashy and extraordinary this season, the combination of cool heads and optimism is obviously working for the Cardinals.
"The results of this meet weren't bad," Parks said.-รก"And we hope to keep improving on into next week."
