LETTERS: Critics of basketball team base gripes on unrealistic expectations

Dear Editor,

I am writing in regard to Nathan Sheets' Wednesday column blaming the men's basketball losing streak on coach Tim Buckley.-á

Yes, if you look at Ball State's history, our men's basketball teams have been quite good and have even broken through to the NCAA tournament a couple of times.-áHowever, like everything else, basketball has evolved into a different game, as has the list of which schools are dominant in the game.-á

I love Ball State just as much as anyone else, but that does not mean I think we are able to wipe the floor with Duke. We are not a Big 10 school; therefore, no matter how hard coach Buckley or any of his assistants try, we cannot recruit players who will be picked in the first round of the NBA draft after their freshman years in college.-áI am pretty sure Coach Tim Buckley does not devise game plans so Ball State will lose.-áIf you would just be a little more realistic, you might understand they are not going to recruit any Kobe Bryants at Ball State.-á

Buckley is doing the best he can, and I am sure the players are also. ...

Perhaps Sheets should try out for the team or apply for the coaching position, if he thinks he knows what he's talking about.
