MEN'S GOLF Cardinals to host Yestingsmeier Invitational

BSU set to play only tournament of year on home course

Gearing up to play host to the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at the Delaware Country Club, the Ball State University men's golf team is looking to put the past behind them.

The team is playing host to 14 teams which have played here previously, along with three which are new to the invitational. The new teams are Austin Peay State, Oakland and Princeton.

The defending individual champion is Ball State's C.D. Hockersmith. Hockersmith is preparing just like any other event, coach Mike Fleck said.

Since this is the Cardinals' home invitational, Fleck is playing everybody on the roster. The starting lineup will be Hockersmith, Patrick Wilkes-Krier, Brandon Boomsma, Andy Skillman and Wayne Denger. The Cardinals will also feature a B-team, consisting of Josh Baldwin, Kyle Cox, Ivan Fuganti, Ben Lakoff and Brian Maurer. Playing individually will be Chris Hanson, Matt Schumaker, Austin Steele and Ryan Hungate.

The invitational will feature many quality teams, Fleck said. He believes Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, Bowling Green, Princeton, Akron and Northern Illinois will be the biggest test for all the teams involved. Eastern Kentucky has had a consistent season and will put up the toughest fight.

"Baldwin, Wilkes-Krier and Hockersmith will be some of the best golfers there," Fleck said. "Along with Nick Schenk of Northern Illinois and a couple of Eastern Kentucky guys."

Fleck is glad to be finally back at home.

"This is a real nice opportunity to play at home and show off our golf courses and to show off our first-class event.
