Web site adapted for campus use

Campus Area Yellow Pages

For students looking for a late-night pizza fix, a place to do their laundry or a store to rent the latest flick, they no longer need to scramble to find a phone book, thanks to the online Campus Area Yellow Pages.

This Verizon Web site helps students find information about local businesses on and around campus.

To access the Campus Area Yellow Pages, students should visit http://www.superpages.com. From there, a link on the left-hand side of the page will take students to a listing of universities from which students can then select their college.

Users can search by company name or by general categories to find a business within 10 miles of campus that fits their needs.

“Instead of having to search through many thousands of businesses in the city by alphabet, we narrow the search down by asking for a business name or category,” Lisa Balusek, public affairs representative for College Area Yellow Pages, said.

Each entry found includes the address and phone number of the business, as well as a map and the distance from the default address to the business. Ball State’s default address is 2000 W. University Ave.

Some entries also offer business profiles, Web sites of the businesses and e-mail contacts, if available.

“If you don’t have a phone book, it’s easy just to hop online. Plus, it has a map, so you can locate what you’re looking for easier,” sophomore Tyler Crain said.

Users can also “bookmark” entries they frequently access into a business directory if they set up a free account at the site. A business directory can hold up to 30 different businesses. Also included on Ball State University’s Campus Area Yellow Pages site are links to the University’s Web site, driving directions to campus and a map of the area.

“[Campus Area Yellow Pages] would help me because I’m not familiar with the area and where to go or what to do on the weekends,” freshman Charnice Milton said.
