BASES EMPTY GRAND SLAM: Indianapolis will be the 2006 Super Bowl champions ...

No, you didn't miss anything. With a week two win in the books the Indianapolis Colts are two for two, and proving something few people believed would ever happen. They have finally developed a solid defensive team.In week two, the Colts held the Jaguars to a lowly field goal. Against Baltimore, a week earlier, Ray Lewis and the Ravens were silenced at home. Only 13 seconds away from being shut-out, Baltimore scored its only touchdown. That's 10 points allowed in two weeks. The last time that happened was 1960. Two-time league MVP Peyton Manning had a bad day, he was off-target, never got into a groove, and had the worst offensive output of his career, (122 yards). He looked lousy going 13-28 with no touchdowns and an interception. A win is a win.The defense came through and suddenly everyone wants to talk about it. Last year we were bored when the offense would score only 21 points by halftime. This year the attraction is: Breaking up the offensive line. The usual suspects for a loss last season were Montae Reagor, Dwight Freeney, Raheem Brock and Robert Mathis. This year we're applauding them.On Sunday, Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich was frustrated, humiliated, and taunted. The Colts defense shook, rattled and rolled him for a total of six sacks and nothing to show for 189 yards. Leftwich was off he gave two obscene hand gestures to Colts defensive coach John Teerlinck.Go ahead, make all the excuses you want: Baltimore and Jacksonville are two mediocre teams. So is every other team besides the Colts.Eagles, Patriots, Steelers, and Chiefs. What is the one thing that the Colts (Manning) have a problem with? They (he) can't win outdoors in the post-season. The Colts have yet to attain home-field advantage in the clutch. What is Indy's ticket to Super Bowl XL? The newly discovered, defensive dominance. With this defense, they will win enough games for home field advantage and playing outside will be left for the birds. The nay-sayers have spoken their piece. Now it's time for some football. This is the year Manning will excel and exceed all expectations. He won't have 49 touchdowns. He won't be chasing records. He won't need to. He will lead the Colts to a 7-0 start before taking a break at the bye week.Enjoy a brat, grab a lager, and maybe even shovel some dirt at the new stadium. In week nine, the Colts will shave another "W" against the Patriots. They will win the Lombardi Trophy on February 5th.If the defense doesn't back down, the only bump in the road would be the Steelers on Nov. 28. By this time, the Horsemen could have at most two losses - Cincinnati and your choice of any remaining games before the bye.Manning and his supercharged offense of 2004 got lucky with the success they had. They never won on offense and defense. They just scored more points than the other team. The defenses around the league have Manning's number (18). They won't be quick to forget it either because with the defense that is being played, Indy is here to stay. The Colts have a new way to win, and win they will.
