Lynyrd Skynyrd has cancelled its End of Summer Jam appearance in Muncie due to lead singer Johnny Van Zant’s health problems.
Cheryl Crowder, director of special events for Muncie Downtown Development, said despite the cancellation, there are no immediate plans for the summer concert series to call it quits.
“The show will go on, it’s just one of those bumps in the road ... we’re working to make sure End of Summer Jam still happens,” Crowder said.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was forced to cancel the tour dates for the next three months, while Van Zant undergoes and recovers from throat surgery to remove a vocal cord polyp.
Downtown Development, one of End of Summer Jam’s sponsers, was informed Thursday at noon that Lynyrd Skynyrd would not be appearing in the annual event.
Crowder would not discuss possible replacements, but, said that Downtown Development is working with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s agency, William Morris, for a new headliner.
“We’re looking for someone of equal talent and notoriety ... someone who would justify the same ticket price,” Crowder said.
Crowder also said a decision would be out within a week as to who would be taking Lynyrd Skynyrd’s place at the concert.
WHTY-FM 93.5 night disc jockey Dan Ross, received calls from listeners all night on Thursday with questions about End of Summer Jam, but most listeners were concerned about the Van Zant’s health.
“A lot of people are disappointed to hear Johnny Van Zant will have to have throat surgery; people are more worried about that,” Ross said.
Ross also said Brian Lough, director of Downtown Development, will be on Backyard Broadcasting stations today between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. to discuss the change in End of Summer Jam’s lineup.
