Alumnus scores first NFL sack for Cowboys

Former Ball State football player Justin Beriault made his prime time debut on Monday Night Football this week when the Dallas Cowboys faced the Seattle Seahawks.

Beriault scored his first NFL sack, a late pass deflection and, with linebacker Eric Obogu, pressured Seattle backup QB David Greene into running behind the end line for a safety.

Beriault has been fighting a knee injury in preseason but is currently listed as backup strong safety to Roy Williams. Beriault still may be in competition for the starting free safety job.

Despite his strong performance, Bill Parcells didn’t have praise for the rookie.

“He did a couple of knucklehead things,” Parcells said in a press conference after the game.

One of Beriault’s teammates, inside linebacker Dat Nguyen, did have praise for him.

“He gave himself an opportunity,” Nguyen told the San Antonio Express-News. “From day one, he’s made a lot of plays. He’s got a nose for the ball.”

Beriault was mentioned by Al Michaels and John Madden during the broadcast and was compared favorably to Bill Bates by the duo.

Rockies place outfielder on disabled list

Ball State’s lone major-leaguer Larry Bigbie was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Colorado Rockies Monday with a strained Achilles’ tendon.

Bigbie has started 15 games for Colorado since being acquired from the Baltimore Orioles on July 29.

Bigbie was held out of the lineup on Sunday’s game against the Cubs.

The left fielder batted .237 with no home runs and two RBIs before leaving Saturday night’s game after feeling pain while making a throw.

Richards honored as ‘Winningest Coach’

Men’s tennis head coach Bill Richards was awarded the Ball State’s Irving Winningest Coach. The Irving Family of Muncie created the award to honor the winningest coach at Ball State each year.

Richards was also awarded the Region IV Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year in the spring for the second time in his 34-year career.

Richards coached the Cardinals to the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships and victories over Purdue, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan State.

Men’s tennis was the only Ball State program to win a MAC title in the 2004-05 season.
