GYMNASTICS: Ball State hires coach from Air Force Academy

Ball State University announced who will be its new head gymnastics coach, only the fourth coach in the program's 30-year history.

Lisa Woody Simonton will join the program after spending the last six years as the head women's gymnastics coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

During those six years, she led the Falcons to two USA Gymnastics national titles and made two team appearances at the NCAA regionals. Last season, Woody Simonton guided her team to a sixth-place finish at the USA Gymnastics National Championships.

In 2001, she was named the NCAA Regional Head Coach of the Year, and in 2000, she won the USA Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year honor.

Woody Simonton replaces long-time Ball State head coach Mary Roth, who retired after her 20th season with the Cardinals. Roth is Ball State's all-time leader in career wins, with 169 overall and 47 in Mid-American Conference competition.

The 2005 Cardinals suffered through a 3-17 overall record and won just one meet in MAC competition. Ball State finished fifth out of seven teams at the MAC Championship last season. Jessica Surridge returns for her senior year, after she finished 18th in the all-around at the 2005 NCAA Central Regional Championships.
