Grad student watches home submerge

Ball State University graduate student Kimberly Robinson still sees images of Katrina’s damage when she goes to sleep.

Robinson saw her house partially submerged under water as she watched CNN Monday. She is the only Ball State student whose home is in Louisiana, according to University Communications.

After watching the news for 10 hours straight, Robinson went to bed without hearing from her family, who recently evacuated from Kenner, a suburb of New Orleans.

“I’ve lived through lots of hurricanes and lots of flooding,” Robinson said.

However, she said, she’s never seen anything like this before.

“You really get used to it when you live down there,” she said.

Robinson last heard from her parents on Sunday night before they left for Liberty, Miss., to stay with relatives.

“No one can reach me,” she said. “I can’t reach anyone.”

Robinson feels helpless and isolated, she said.

Robinson said this is the first time her parents have evacuated their home for a natural disaster.

She said she will try to go home as soon as possible to help her parents recover from the storm.

Editor’s note: Robinson is a member of the Daily News staff.
