Search continues for officials

Committee will meet to plan hiring schedule for Student Affairs director

Ball State University announced Monday that the search has officially started for the new director of student affairs, which is just one of positions that the university is trying to fill this summer.

The positions of provost, director of student affairs and director of the entrepreneurship program still remain vacant, but applications are being accepted and some interviews will begin by either the end of July or mid-August.

Because President Jo Ann Gora eliminated the position of vice president of student affairs, a new position was needed to put someone in charge of the office of student affairs.

The search for this position could not begin until after the vice president for marketing, communications and enrollment management was filled, and with Tom Taylor now in that position, the review of applications for a director of student affairs will begin immediately, said Lawrence Smith, who assembled the search committee and is acting associate dean of Teachers College.

The committee will hold its first meeting on June 29, and at that time, it will plan when other meetings and interviews will take place. If things go well, the interviews will be finished by the end of Second Summer Session, so that someone could be appointed in early August, he said.

The search for a new director of Ball State's entrepreneurship program, however, has been under way since Spring Semester. The search will continue throughout the summer with interviews of three or four strong applicants, Brien Smith, chair of the department of marketing and management, said.

"Entrepreneurship is a hot area, so there's a lot of other schools out there looking to fill spots, and there's not always enough people for the spots," he said.

For this reason, the department is using more aggressive and unconventional recruitment techniques to find certain people, rather than having people look for Ball State.

"You've really got to go out and shake the bushes," Smith said. Normally, people go to an interview for a coveted job almost begging to get hired, but in the business world, employers often do more searching than the applicants.

For the rest of the summer, the department will continue its search until it votes on which applicant to hire, Smith said.

For the position of provost, about 45 people have applied, O'Neal Smitherman, chair of the provost search committee, said.

After phone and video interviews are finished, the committee will invite three or four candidates to visit campus in September for tours, in-person interviews and open forums with students.
