Marketing VP position candidates narrowed down to two

Applicants to begin visiting campus this week, hold forums

Ball State University has narrowed its search for vice president of marketing, communications and enrollment management down to two candidates.

The candidates will take part in meetings and 90-minute public forums over the next week as part of their visits to campus.

One candidate is Tom Taylor, who is currently the assistant provost for enrollment management at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), an honors college of about 11,000 students. Taylor started with UMBC in 1977 as assistant director of financial aid. From there, he moved up the ropes to become assistant provost for admissions, financial aid and scholarships before assuming his current position.

Taylor's public forum is at 2 p.m. Friday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Forum Room.

The other candidate is Andrew Flagel, the dean of admissions and enrollment management at George Mason University in Fiarfax, Va. Flagel took his position at George Mason University in July of 2001 and has taught some communication courses for the department since the fall of 2002.

He will hold his public forum at 2 p.m. May 23 in Art & Journalism Building room 225.

"We've been working with the candidates in two ways," Norman Beck, search committee secretary, said.

The committee has met with the candidates several times, often using interactive video to stay in contact with them and once meeting in person with one candidate who had happened to be in the area.

"So far their visits were only with the committee," Beck said. "We're encouraging students to come to the forums ... the selection process is going very quickly."

Ball State University President Jo Ann Gora created the vice president of marketing, communications and enrollment management position after asking Doug McConkey to resign from his position as vice president of student affairs in January.

McConkey was appointed to his position in 1988 and, after the resignation was announced in December of 2004, said he was hoping to increase direct contact with the students. Many fellow faculty members were disappointed by McConkey's departure, saying that he had done many great things for the students and the university during his time here.

Gora's reason for eliminating McConkey's position rather than replacing him was that she wanted to better emphasize Ball State and its attributes. This includes more aggressive advertising for future students and faculty.
