Braken reaches 1 million goal during past year

More than one million visitors have passed through the doors of Braken Library since April of 2004.

Arthur Hafner, the dean of University Libraries, set a goal last April to have more than one million people visit the building during the 2004-05 fiscal year.

By the end of April, 1,020,290 people had passed through the library's doors. An average of 4,000 people visited the library each day from January through April.

Counters inside the electronic sensors at the doors of the library count the number of people who go through them each day.

Hafner attributed the high number of visitors to the library's ability to adapt to the new needs of students.

Remodeling the inside, improving study spaces and providing access to the library's staff were also parts of the plan to reach the 1 million mark. The changes were also made so that the library could be used by students doing group work and those wanting to study alone.
