SOFTBALL Poor offense continues as BSU drops third conference contest

Cardinals scored just three runs in series at Toledo

The lack of offense in Ball State's first Mid-American Conference series continued Monday. Toledo (18-15, 4-5 MAC) completed the sweep of Ball State by winning the final game of the series at home, 3-1.

The Cardinals (10-22, 0-3) managed just three hits against the same pitcher who threw a no-hitter against them a day earlier -- Stephanie Moore.

"It's very disappointing," coach Terri Laux said. "Our offense killed us. Toledo was a team I think we could have gotten two to three games from."

The Cards got their first hit in the fourth inning when Cortney Patteson singled to right field and advanced to second on a throwing error. However, the Cards were unable to do any further damage.

"Throughout the pre-MAC schedule, we faced better pitchers than Toledo has," Laux said. " We didn't make adjustments to the pitches they were throwing. We put pressure on ourselves offensively and tried to hit individually rather than as a team."

Ball State's bats came to life again in the seventh inning. Taylor Yancey started things with a one-out infield single. She advanced to second following a throwing error and to third after a passed ball. Crystal Newton's sacrifice bunt sent Yancey home for the Cards lone run.

"We wait until the later half of the game to get our offense going, and it doesn't work for us," Laux said.

Nikki Hellem took loss, dropping her record to 4-7. She pitched six innings, walking two and striking out two.

Ball State returns to home for a doubleheader against Indiana State at 2 p.m Wednesday.
