REVIEW: Bloodsimple 'A Cruel World'

The evolution of the metal genre comes full circle with "A Cruel World," the new album by Bloodsimple. It hits hard right away with the opening track "Straight Hate," and moves flawlessly through the rest of the album. The transitions between songs are nearly perfect with each song leading smoothly (as metal goes) into the following. The album keeps an almost constant tempo, with growing energy in each song. The band hits hard even with a ballad, the semi-acoustic "The Leaving Song" which evokes feelings of lost love in a metal tone -- something hard to come by in today's music scene. The lyrics "Can't feel guilty, it's just a memory/ All the things you put me through/ All the hopeless nights I tried to make it right for you/ Show me how it is to lose and who the hell are you/ To drag me down with you" are repeated throughout the song, and give a sense of loss. The Band seems to take pages out of the books of many popular metal, punk, and rock artists that are on the scene today. The screaming that takes place throughout most of the album is reminiscent of many Slipknot songs, for the metal/hardcore fan this album will fall on welcome ears. Even those who aren't big fans of the metal or hardcore genre can still find some solace and enjoyment in "A Cruel World." Non-metalheads, though, may want to hold back.
