MEN'S GOLF Denger leads Cards to second place

Ball State came up five strokes short of beating Mid-American Conference rival Toledo at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate this weekend when the Cardinals placed second overall.

Ball State ended with a team score of 873, five behind Toledo, but ahead of six MAC schools, Penn State and Kansas State.

Wayne Denger shot a 68-73-69 -- 210 to tie for first with Toledo's Justin Bertsch and Tyler Riley. However, Denger lost the three-way playoff on the forth hole, and Bertsch claimed top honors.

Patrick Wilkes-Krier placed seventh in the field of 77 for the Cardinals, followed by Bud Graessle and Andy Skillman, who tied for 15th place. CD Hockersmith tied for 26th.

The second-place performance was one of the Cardinals' best of the season, as the Cardinals will move on to the Kepler Invitational at Ohio State's Scarlet Course next weekend, where the Cardinals hope to continue their superior play.
