Muncie eateries, entertainers unite to benefit new arts center

For those who have had their fill of residence hall dining services and fast food restaurants, Cornerstone Center for the Arts is offering an alternative with the 19th Annual Taste of Muncie on Saturday.

The Taste of Muncie showcases over 20 restaurants and caterers in the Muncie area. It serves as a fund raiser for Cornerstone and its programs. Purchasing a $20 ticket allows the participant to sample food from these local restaurants, listen to live music and have a chance at door prizes, and much is the same as the 18 years previous, Bolander-Price said.

The participating restaurants use this as a way to get the name out and make people aware of what they offer. Scott Craddock; manager at Scotty's Brewhouse, which will showcase its homemade chicken tortilla soup, homemade peanut butter pie and barbecue pulled pork; said participating in the past has helped business for Scotty's.

"(Participating) definitely helps business; it helps to get our name out there and to make the public aware of what we have to offer," Craddock said.

The 2004 winner of the Taste of Muncie, 909 Grille employee Darla Little, said the restaurant has also witnessed a jump.

"After we won it last year, we saw a big jump in business. Also with the radio ads we have seen a growth in the past few weeks," Little said.

909 Grille will showcase many items, including peanut slaw and apple dumplings with caramel sauce.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts is located in the former Community Civic Center and takes on many activities during the day. Cassandra Bolander-Price, director of communications for Cornerstone, said everything from parties to community meetings take place in the building.

"Everyday there are events in the Colonnade Room banquet hall, whether it is a wedding reception, a company training session or the MLK breakfast," she said.

Across the hall from the banquet room is Edmund Burke Auditorium, where the live music will take place.

This year, the event's live music will be in the form of pianist Paul McDaniel, who will play with the band The Directors, and singer and "Middletown Idol" winner Beth Leavell-Davis.

The line up of restaurants this year includes 909 Grille, Applebees, Blue Bottle Coffee House, Bright Moon, Cardinal Family Dining, Dairy Dream, Dick's Bodacious Bar-B-Q, Ivy Tech State College, Johnny Carino's, MCL Cafeteria, Our Daily Bread, Pepsi, Pete's Duck Inn, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster, Scotty's Brewhouse, Slater Hawkins, Tanglevine Crossing, University Club-Hotel Roberts, Vera Mae's Bistro, Vince's Restaurant and Wilson Winery.
