After completing a 26-game road schedule to start the season, the Ball State softball team will finally host its first home game today. Ball State plays a doubleheader against IUPUI today at 2 p.m. at the Ball State softball complex.
IUPUI (6-11) has lost four of its last five games. The Jaguars beat Ball State 6-3 in fall play earlier this year.
The Cardinals (8-18) split four games over the weekend at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City. Ball State beat South Dakota State and North
Dakota State, but fell twice to host Iowa.
The Cards opened the tournament Saturday against North Dakota State in a 2-0 win, scoring both runs in the fourth inning. Katie Pilger scored on a sacrifice fly by Sarah McGregor. Taylor Yancey later scored on a fielding error.
Nikki Hellem went the distance for the Cards. She struck out a career-high 11 batters in picking up her third win of the season.
Ball State faced No. 21 Iowa on the second game Saturday. The Cards held the Hawkeyes scoreless until the fifth inning. Iowa outhit BSU 7-2, and Amy Brownfield took the pitching loss.
Sunday's game against South Dakota State took nine innings before the Cards pulled out a 3-2 victory.
SDSU scored the game's first run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ball State responded in the next inning when Yancey scored the next inning off a Cortney Patteson ground out. The Cards took the lead in the top of the ninth thanks to a two-run home run by Pilger. SDSU threatened in the bottom half by scoring one run, but Brownfield struck out the final batter of the game.
Brownfield went all nine innings and improved her season record to 3-2.
BSU only managed two hits in the second matchup against Iowa in a 10-0 loss. Hellem dropped her record to 3-5.
