SOFTBALL Boilermakers defeat Cardinals

Two errors in fourth inning slow Purdue to add three runs

A pair of Ball State errors led to a 5-1 victory for visiting intrastate rival Purdue on Wednesday. The Boilermakers scored three runs in the fourth inning aided by the two Cardinal errors on their way to the win at the Softball Complex.

Ball State (10-19) managed to score its only run in the fifth inning. Taylor Yancey led off the inning with a double, then scored on a triple to center field by Qunicy Duran.

Purdue (21-12) scored its first run in the fourth inning, but it was the fifth inning where the Boilermakers did their damage, scoring three runs in the inning off two hits and two Cardinal errors.

"You know errors are going to happen -- the game is made for mistakes," head coach Terri Laux said. "We left the door open, and they capitalized. It's disappointing in the fact that we weren't as aggressive as we were [Tuesday]."

The aggressiveness Laux referred to was in a pair of wins against IUPUI. The Cardinals used an explosive offense to post wins of 10-4 and 7-0.

After the Boilermakers added their final run in the top of the seventh, the Cards tried to mount a comeback. Amanda Pick and Yancey both singled in the final inning to help load the bases, but the Cardinals were unable to come back and win a third consecutive game.

Both teams had six hits for the game, as Yancey led BSU with two. The Cardinals stranded seven runners, while Purdue left six on base.

"We've seen that throughout the pre-MAC schedule," Laux said. "We aren't as aggressive against the bigger schools. That's a mental block that we have to fix."

Amy Brownfield took the loss for the Cards, dropping her record to 4-3 this year. She allowed two earned runs and struck out three batters.

Ball State opens Mid-American Conference play this weekend at Toledo, Ohio. The teams will play two games Saturday and one game Sunday.
